Mr. C. Viswanatha Iyer

It is important that we mention about the Late B.R Chandrashekar Iyer who is Mr. Viswanatha Iyer’s Father. He lived as a Jodidhar (owner of villages) and later became a Class I Railway Contractor after the Introduction of Land Ceiling Act. This is where our journey with TATA steel began.

Mr. Chandrashekar continues to give us an account of other details: “My father was introduced to TATA Steel by the Railways, as my grandfather was a Class I contractor with them, TATA Steel wanted to establish a yard at Bangalore and I do recollect him sharing with me about facing some issues with the local laborers. My father had taken it up as a challenge and was confident that he could accomplish it as, my father already had an experience of being consignment agents of Hindustan Steel for Boruka Steel.

Mrs. Gayatri Chandrashekar

Smt. GayathriChandrashekhar is easily one of the best Bharatanatyam dancers we have in our age, and has had a history of enchanting her audience by her sheer passion towards dance. Her accomplishments in the field of Bharatanatyam are plenty. She established herself as a loyal patron of the dance form by founding her own dance Academy “Nrutya School of Art” in Bengaluru, in the year 2009. Today, she imparts to her students what she believes to be a sacred artform.

Although she has attained a larger than life stature among those who look up to her, she is someone who has had humble beginnings. She was just a child back then, a child who sought dance, and not wings, so she could fly!

Hailing from a Tamil brahmin family in Mylapore, where much attention was paid to gods and star signs, she was a child, and still is at heart, who could just not sit at one place. She was a dreamer who danced with her feet, and was on her way to become a dancer who dreamt with her feet.

Her classical dance journey commenced at the age of 6 at a VazhuvoorPaani School of Bharatanatyam. She went on to do her Arangetram at the age of 12, under the guidance of Guru Kalaimamani Smt. K.J. Sarasa, one of the most sought after classical dance maestros in the field of Bharatanatyam in Chennai.

In May 1995, she made her international debut as a member of Archeologist Dr. Nagaswamy’s internationally acclaimed dance troupe with an overall 35 performances staged across the world. Her performances in Germany, Canada, Sweden, USA, UK, Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia, Oman & Japan have earned her incredible fame. Call her a literal globetrotter, maybe? The most recent foray of hers on the international scene was her performance at the recently held London International Dance Festival.

With a Master’s Degree in Commerce from the University of Chennai, she moved to Bangalore, where she is currently heading as Director of Shekar Logistics Private Limited in Bangalore.

She has been an ‘A’ grade talent artist of the Chennai Doordarshan. She has been bestowed with the honor of performing Bharatanatyam Recital for a dinner hosted by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, late Selvi. J. Jayalalitha at the first Assembly session and for the second time with an audience packed with delegates from across the world in a meeting with the Chief minister.

However, what's more interesting is that she gave the first-ever dance performance in the British Museum of London, and was the torchbearer for all the dance performances that followed.

Like the strong independent woman that she is, She has been performing solo recitals since she was 12 and is still performing extensively in reputed sabhas all over the country. Notable amongst her performance repertoire are:

  • AnanthaPadmanabhaswamy temple, Trivandrum
  • 55th & 57th Ganesh Utsav, Bangalore
  • ShirdiSansthan, Shirdi
  • Shivaratriprogramme (past few years) at the 1000 year old Someshwara temple, Ulsoor
  • Thanjavur& Chidambaram Natyanjali festivals annually.
  • World Tamil conference, Thanjavur
  • Maharashtra cultural exchange programme.
  • Shanmughananda Hall, Mumbai

Her prowess in choreography reflects in her different productions. Her “Krishna Koumudee” - a monologue on the Lord Krishna’s different loves for Yashoda, Radha and Meera. the monologue on the navarasas in Ramayana has been successfully staged across the country. Quite recently, she presented the same as a ballet - “MaryadaPurushottam - Sri Rama'' with her senior students at the 57th Ganesh Utsav& also for a Diwali fest @ The Koramangala Club, 2021.

Gayathri’s expertise doesn’t stop with only the classical format of dance. Apart from lending her creativity towards choreographing contemporary, fusion &bollywood styles, her artistry translates onto the canvas, the result being wonderful paintings.

She has also been a part of major dance ballets like Shakunthalam, KunraikudiKuravanji, KutralaKuravanji ,Parijatham and Annammaya.

Another important feather in her cap, utilizing her talent for a generous cause and to fulfill her humanitarian goal, she has performed a Fundraiser for“Karunashraya” – a home for Cancer patients, in association with cricketer Rahul Dravid. Needless to say, the show resulted in a great success in raising a huge sum of funds for the organization. While her best reward for such empathy towards fellow humans is the fulfillment that she's found, she has also won many awards and accolades. To name a few:
  • MRS INDIA 2021
  • IWAA 2021
  • Femina ICONS OF SOUTH 2020.
  • IWDIAA Women Achievers award
  • G-Town - Most Influential Classical Dancer

Apart from these accolades, Gayathri has been featured in “Femina” magazine & has been featured amongst most powerful women of South as part of FEMINA’s coffee book .

Under her able guidance, she has conducted Arangetram and gajjapooja (salangaipoojai ) for many students under her Nrutya banner. Gayathri has not only performed and choreographed but has also been a judge for many dance competitions in schools and colleges and also for the Rotary Idol, Bangalore.

Today, Smt. Gayathri is nothing less than the perfect illustration of a devotee of Indian Classical Bharatanatyam, a woman of multiple dimensions and virtues. While it takes talent and hard work to be a true genius, it takes passion and compassion to be an artist. And Gayathri is a genius artist!

Her metaphor for dance and rhythm says don't dance to live but live to dance. "Rhythm is my heartbeat," she says, "And dance is my oxygen!"

While she's not busy conquering the world, one dance step at a time, she keeps herself occupied in talking to people and transforming them. She's a Tarot card reader, a certified life coach and a healer. And most of all, a life enthusiast!
